Recycle Right Tabletops

Game Design

An idea was developed to connects the value of recycling to something kids find relatable—things that pique their interest and motivate them to develop recycling habits.

I was approached to provide game design, prototyping, and branding for a card and board game centred around Singapore's recycling system, tailored for young children.

Brainstorming with stakeholders

Many people still have questions like, 'Is this plastic recyclable?' and 'Where should I properly discard this?' Therefore, it was crucial for us to ensure that the game was pedagogic, intuitive, educational, and, most importantly, fun to play.

From our onboarding session, there were two games planned in mind.

  • Recycle Right - Card game to identify the right item to recycle, donate or rubbish!

  • Karang Guni Trail - A board game that test the knowledge absorbed from Recycle Right.

Prototyping

In the early stage, we convened on Tabletop Simulator to swiftly create an online, low-fidelity prototype for user testing and refine the game design mechanics.

Define

Design Considerations

Working with children, who are naturally drawn to visually captivating content, we utilise vibrant colours that also align with Singapore's colour-coded bins. Our goal is to keep children engaged while reinforcing the concept of recycling in their minds. Additionally, fonts designed for young children were chosen to enhance their reading experience.

Whenever feasible, we prioritize sustainability in our production process. For instance, reducing bleed printing by using a blank border on our prints wherever possible.

Outcome

Board game

To kick off the launch of a new application cycle, I crafted a series of dynamic outreach materials designed to attract startups and large corporations, with the main aim of building a community.
